Compliance is reactive. It shouldn't be.
Industry estimates put the share of criminal proceeds intercepted by the compliance functions built to stop them at under one percent. The reason is structural. And it is fixable.
Today's compliance runs on a simple loop. A transaction occurs. A rule fires. A flag enters a queue. Hours or days later, a human analyst opens the case, gathers context, makes a judgement and closes it. By the time the analyst reaches the case, the transaction has already cleared. The money has already moved. The fraud has already happened. The most a compliance function can do is reconstruct what happened and file a report.
This is not prevention. It is forensics with a service-level agreement.
Why it was built this way
Compliance has worked like this for thirty years because the technology to do anything else did not exist. A human analyst takes minutes to clear a routine case, and with millions of transactions a month you cannot put a person in the path of every one. The architecture was a concession to the slowness of human cognition, not a design choice.
The concession no longer holds
Agents can now clear a routine transaction monitoring case in seconds, applying the firm's SOP literally and reaching the same conclusion a human would have reached an hour later. When that is true, the architecture changes. The work that used to happen after a flag was raised can happen before the transaction clears. This is what we mean by pre-flag. Brayns evaluates each transaction at the moment it occurs. Most are unambiguous and the system clears them. The genuinely suspicious ones are escalated to a person in real time, with full context: every check that ran, every rule applied, and the specific reason the system stopped.
What changes
Two things. The false-positive rate that drowns most teams disappears from the human queue, because the work that should never have entered it stops entering it. And real risk surfaces in real time. For time-sensitive crime, fraud especially, that is the difference between catching something and preventing it. The first firms to make this shift will run at a different speed and cost. The ones that wait will compete against both.
